2014 French Open Champion!



Maria has won her fifth Grand Slam title at the French Open in Paris as she defeated No.4 seed Simona Halep of Romania. Maria won 6-4 6-7 6-4 in just over three hours. Congratulations Maria!

This is the first time that Maria has won the same Grand Slam twice and is the first Russian player to have ever accomplished this feat.

Here is what happened in the match:
First set
0-1 - Halep gets the first break of the match when Maria hits a backhand long
0-2 - Halep holds her serve in another tight deuce game
1-2 - Maria gets her first game of the match as she holds her serve to 30
2-2 - On Maria's fourth break point on Halep's serve, Maria finally breaks when Halep hits a backhand out
3-2 - Another long game but Maria's holds her serve and moves in front for the first time
4-2 - Maria breaks's Halep serve again with a stunning backhand down-the-winner for her fourth game in a row
5-2 - A straightforward hold for Maria as she holds to 15
5-3 - Halep holds to love to force Maria to serve for the set
5-4 - Break! Maria drops her serve while serving for the match as Halep gets the set back on serve
6-4 - Maria breaks Halep's serve to take the first set on her second set point as Halep hits a forehand wide. The set took 57 minutes

Second set
1-0 - Maria holds her serve to love in her first service game of the second set.
2-0 - Maria breaks Halep's serve again when Halep hits a shot wide
2-1 - A shaky game for Maria as she drops her serve as Halep gets the set back on serve
2-2 - Halep holds her serve for the first time since the eighth game of the match
3-2 - Maria comes through a tricky service game to hold her serve and pumps her fist and shouts 'come on' after taking the game
3-3 - Halep holds her serve to 15
4-3 - Maria keeps fighting and holds her serve to 30
4-4 - Maria has two break points in Halep's service but is unable to take them as Halep holds to level the set
4-5 - Up 40-15 on her serve, Maria drops four successive points as Halep breaks to serve for the set
5-5 - Maria breaks! At 40-30 on Halep's serve, a lucky net cord gives Maria the break
5-6 - Maria drops her serve for the third consecutive break and Halep has a chance to serve for the set for a second time
6-6 - Another break as Halep drops her serve to force a tie-break
6-7 - Halep wins a tight tie-break 7-5 when Maria hits a backhand wide

Third set
1-0 - Maria breaks to 15 when Halep hits a backhand long
1-1 - The breaks of serve continue as for the sixth consecutive is a break as Halep gets the set back on serve
1-2 - Halep holds her serve and leads the match for the time in the match since the beginning of set 1
2-2 - Maria save two break points as she holds her serve for the first time since the middle of the second set
3-2 - Maria breaks to 30 when Halep dumps a shot into the net
4-2 - An easy hold for Maria as she holds her serve to love with some strong serving and powerful groundstrokes
4-3 - Halep keeps in touching distance of Maria as she holds her serve to 30
4-4 - A double-fault on break points gives Halep a break to level the set
5-4 - Break for Maria! Maria breaks to love for a chance to serve for the match for the first time
6-4 - Maria produces a brilliant final game as she holds her serve to love and wins match point on a shot wide by Halep and then goes down on her knees knowing what she achieved in one of the longest French Open finals in history
In the WTA rankings, Maria moves up to No.5 with 4741 points. On the Road To Singapore leaderboard, Maria moves up to No.1.
