We harp on tanning beds kind of a lot around here (sorry we’re not sorry!), so we love this news: The Food and Drug Administration announced yesterday that it will reclassify sunbeds from “low risk” to “medium risk,” a category which comes with some appropriately harsh red tape.
Specifically, tanning bed manufacturers will have to include a warning that anyone under 18 shouldn’t use the beds, and any marketing materials that come with the devices must include details about their cancer risks and a recommendation that indoor tanners get regular skin checks for cancer. After all, people who tan inside are about 59 percent more likely to develop melanoma.
That’s a pretty good first step, right? Well, we have to give props as well to the handful of states who already have gone a step further and either required parental permission for anyone under 16 or banned indoor tanning altogether for minors. Progress!
