The Fault in Our Stars is the movie—and book—people have been talking about for a while now. Getting like MAJOR buzz. And people will for sure will be talking about it for a while after this weekend , as the film opens nationwide today. But what's the hype about? We break it down for you five ways.
1. The cast, specifically our girl Shailene Woodley: Shailene is getting rave reviews for her role as the film's leading lady, Hazel. And we love Shai—she's talented and comes off totally comfortable in her own skin in interviews. Have you seen her bravely ditch shoes on city streets in red carpet gowns? And hello, the girl wears toed shoes when she's off-duty. Kickass, right? But if she's not enough to rope you into dropping $14 for a ticket, the film also stars sure-to-be-a-hearthrob Ansel Elgort as her love interest, Willem Dafoe, Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, and Mike Birbiglia (psst: if you haven't seen his Sleepwalk With Me, you're missing out on some big laughs).
2. The book is really successful and really good, too: The John Green story—the author has been called "The Teen Whisperer"—has been on the New York Times's best-seller list for 124 consecutive weeks and on top of that, it reached the No. 1 spot on Amazon six months before it was even published.
3. It's a cancer love story, but not in the "usual cancer love story" sorta way: Green set out to write an "unsentimental" cancer novel, and the film has stayed true to that desire, with smart, fresh dialogue ("What a slut time is. She screws everybody."), and characters that are fleshed out, but still come off as real people.
4. It's an epic romance: You're going to cry. Just accept that now. But there's no time like the summer to indulge in a sweeping love story, right? And this one's for the record books, guys. Even the cast has admitted to crying.
5. The soundtrack is awesome: Ed Sheeran, M83, Lykke Li, Birdy, and many more contributed sweet tracks (see it here). So at least there are some really good tunes to accompany those tears.
